The Board of Trustees of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), led by the Chairman, Chief Samuel Alabi, have recently sworn-in the First Deputy President of the Federation, Mr. Nkereuwem Onung, as the Acting President following the untimely death of Alhaji Rabo Saleh Kareem, the immediate past President.
It will be recalled that the immediate past President of FTAN, Alhaji Rabo, died on the 16th of April 2021 in Abuja, after a protracted illness. He had since been buried according to Islamic rites. Since then, messages of condolences and commiserations have been expressed by national and international travel, hospitality and tourism stakeholders, praising the virtues of Alhaji Rabo.
Accordingly, Mr. Onung will be the Acting President of FTAN until a General Elections is held in July 2021. The elections were previously scheduled, as per the constitution, to hold this year during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Federation in Abuja.
The new Acting President is a former banker and a well-known tourism development advocate, investor and operator in Nigeria and West Africa. His investments in the industry span across tour operations, transport fleet management, event promotion and destination management. “Remlords” as Mr. Onung is fondly called in the industry, owns some of the leading travel brands in Nigeria, including Remlords Tours & Logistics, and operates from Calabar, Lagos and Abuja.
Meanwhile, the Governing Council of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria have announced plans to hold a Valedictory Program to honour the late Alhaji Rabo on the fourtieth day after his death in Abuja.
